Signature is a cardholder verification method, or CVM, available for EMV cards.
A signature verification requires the card user to sign for the payment at the point of sale, typically through a touchscreen device or on a paper receipt. The sales associate then verifies the transaction by comparing the signature provided by the card user to the signature on the card itself. The merchant is responsible for keeping a digital or physical copy of the signed sales receipt, and for providing this copy as evidence during disputes.
Signature CVMs are already in widespread use with both magnetic stripe and EMV cards, and they remain the most common CVM for attended POS stations.
