EMV Card Authentication: Online

Online card authentication is a protocol for verifying that an EMV card is legitimate. It is designed to protect against counterfeit cards, especially those produced by skimming.

As its name suggests, online card authentication requires an internet connection so the terminal can send card data to the issuer for verification. The concept is similar to that used to verify traditional magnetic stripe cards, but it is more secure because EMV smart chip cards use cryptograms generated by symmetric keys. Each EMV card’s keys are unique.

Online card authentication uses bits of transaction-specific data to generate a different cryptogram for each transaction, further enhancing security.
